Close Kept Secrets to Weight Loss Lesson #20

Do you remember the movie, Bambi? During spring time all the animals begin to notice the opposite sex and the magic of “love” takes place. The word, twitterpaited, is used to illustrate this magical phenomenon. Well guess what, I am twitterpaited!!

As you know I am divorced and have a great relationship with my ex-husband. We share stories about our dating experiences and only desire happiness for each other.

For the past eight months, I have been dating on-line and it’s been a wonderful experience in practicing how to date again after twenty seven years. I am so grateful for these men who I have attracted and given me the opportunity to learn how to communicate better. Have I learned a lot? YES!!! Am I ready to write a book about my experiences? YES!!! I’ll share a funny story about one man who asked me if my teeth were my own. It seems that he had gone on a date and the woman had borrowed a friend’s false teeth. Pretty funny, huh? I have others to share, but I’ll save those for my book.

Remember how I’ve written about the Law of Attraction. Recently, I met someone who is absolutely incredible. He e-mailed me on the dating service and I wrote back that I love to laugh. Thus, I told him to make me laugh and that he would be graded. Of course, I expected that he would just send these knock, knock jokes, but he blew me away with his hilarious story about high school pranks. I was rolling on the floor with laughter. Then when I met him, I felt like I was in the presence of Robin Williams; I had to hold my cheeks as they hurt from laughing so hard. It’s a great feeling!

I’m sharing my story because I believe in the Laws of Attraction. Three years ago I wrote down the characteristics of the man I intended to attract–I got this idea from Tony Robbins, who is a motivational speaker. This man has all those characteristics.

Each day I express gratitude for my great relationship knowing that I’m sending out that higher vibrational thought. I get to surrender this to God and leave it in His hands. I get to enjoy and live in the moment and it feels tremendous. Whatever you send out is what you will get back so why not make it positive?

The Psychology of Weight Loss

You see the razor-thin models gracing the covers of magazines…you watch actors and actresses on the big screen who seem to never gain a pound. And you wonder: How do I differ from them? You may be surprised to learn that a number of famous people at one time had difficulty maintaining a healthy weight. But they were able to conquer their problem, thanks to a new-and-improved, healthy view of eating.

You may not realize it, but there is a certain psychology at work in successful weight loss. It is no surprise, then, that the magazine Psychology Today has explored the issue in-depth. In October of 2004, the magazine posted an article on its website detailing the experiences of Diane Berry, a nurse practitioner who studied women who had shed at least 15 pounds and had maintained their weight loss for an average of seven years.

The women shared some important things in common. For instance, they all achieved their weight loss through either Weight Watchers or TOPS, which meant that they had a firm support network as they tried to maintain their weight. The group meetings were highly important, because they learned to recognize that they were certainly not alone in their struggles with weight. The women were also quite unusual because up to 90 percent of individuals who have lost weight end up putting it back on within five years.

Another common trait of these women is that they appeared to undergo a profound mood shift as they made the transition from fat to thin. From all indications, they appeared to be depressed when they were heavy but, as they attempted to lose weight, their mood brightened.

For these women, healthy eating became a habit—a habit they refused to break. They themselves recognized the tremendous role that psychology plays in weight loss. They refused to give in to negative feelings of frustration and denial and chose a positive path instead. The women also made it a point to weigh themselves regularly so that they could chart their progress.

And they recognized that maintaining weight loss would be a lifetime struggle. They knew that they could not attempt a weight loss program then put it

back on the shelf. They had to learn new eating patterns that they could continue week in and week out. In some cases, they likened their struggle to that of an alcoholic. In other words, they recognized the gravity of their problem and took steps to correct the situation.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of these women’s experiences was the fact that their weight loss actually came in spurts. At times, they regained their weight, but they did not let that deter them from their final goal. They simply viewed their setbacks as challenges that they needed to overcome. This may be the key psychological trait that separates successful dieters from unsuccessful ones—perseverance. In essence, these women were able to change their personalities in a positive way in order to achieve their long-term weight loss goals.

Another interesting aspect of this study was that it showed that the women who had undergone weight loss transformation were genuinely happy. This shows the tremendous psychological impact that weight loss can have on an individual. Once an individual is free from the burden of extra weight, he or she is better able to meet the challenges of life head-on. The dieter benefits from positive reinforcement, as relatives, friends, and co-workers congratulate him or her for the weight loss. In this way, losing weight can be quite a life-affirming experience and can lead to a more optimistic outlook on life.

It must be noted here that the psychology of weight loss is a complicated matter. There is no single ingredient that can turn a fat person into a thin one. However, recognizing that there is a psychological component to successful weight loss may, in fact, be half the battle. Once an individual recognizes that he or she is engaged in a psychological fight, he or she is better able to do battle. By retraining oneself to seek healthy approaches to diet, one can, in effect, mold oneself into a new individual—one that no longer lives to eat, but simply eats to live.

Lose Weight by Keeping Insulin Levels Under Control

Insulin levels are influenced by your diet. When you consume a cookie for example the sugar in the cookie is absorbed by your body rather quickly thus causing your blood sugar to rise. A rapid rise in blood sugar can active an insulin response in the body. Insulin is also known as the fat producing hormone. What this means to you is that even if your calories are low and you follow a low fat diet you can still gain weight.

There are numerous studies, primarily done as research for controlling diabetes, on this subject. What has been developed is a rating system that tells you how quickly foods will cause your blood sugar to rise. If you are overweight or insulin resistant then when your blood sugar goes up rapidly you run the risk of activating an insulin response. Once the insulin is released it will often result in your blood sugar dropping to normal levels. Again if you are overweight or insulin resistant chances are good that your body requires more insulin to stabilize your blood sugar than normally needed. Then what often happens is your blood sugar will drop too low causing headaches, mood swings and cravings for sugar.

The problem with elevated insulin levels is that your body will be in fat producing mode instead of fat burning mode. High insulin levels cause your body to retain water, form plaque in your arteries and gain weight. If you want to manage your weight

you will need to manage your insulin levels. One way to do this is to use the “Glycemic Index” as a guideline. We have rated foods from 140 to under 20. The higher the number the faster your blood sugar will rise. One surprise will be potatoes rate in the 100-140 range while peanuts rate fewer than 20. People will often eat the potato and avoid nuts. They think low fat, low calorie, they should lose weight. The reason they may not lose weight is because they are over producing insulin, resulting in weight gain.

Coaching Assignment: Your assignment this week is to avoid an insulin response. Become familar to the Glycemic Index and avoid any foods over a rating of 59. This will be a challenge for you. So many of traditional diet foods will be on the chart rating higher than you might expect. But for one week follow a meal plan that will consistently rate fewer than 59. See how you feel, notice how your body responds. Most people feel less bloated and have more energy.

Did You Know Weather Can Affect Your Weight?

Did you know that there is a difference in weight between LA and New York? If you are thin in New York good chances that you are thought of as fat in LA! It is only about maybe 10 lbs in difference. In New York every women you see has real curves, there is not as a size 2 in the bunch. Yet in LA, every one of those women from New York would start feeling fat within minutes of stepping foot off the airplane!

One of the main factors is probably due to the weather. Yes! We are going to blame this on the weather! There is not a time of year, in LA that you cannot be comfortable wear a bathing suit. What that means is, there not a time in the year that exercising and dieting ever truly stops.

Now get this juicy fact, the more clothes you take off in LA, the more looks you are going to get, but in New York, the more you have on in clothing, the more looks you’re going to get. It is like a dress code that no one really knows about, but it turns out to be true fact. All because of the changing of seasons, you cover it up, curiosity starts happening in the minds of the men.

Here is what you need to do to be notice in LA. You must be wearing, tight jeans, carrying this year’s purse and, on your feet, this season’s shoes. Turning that around and head for New York, its a dress that gets the looks. Why? It is because of their weather. What you wear can covers up a multitude of sins, meaning those extra few pounds that would make you invisible back in LA, makes you a hot mama in New York!

Those who

visit both sides of the coast feel it is healthier for all women to visit the coast opposite of where they may live now. It would open your eyes to the fact that not being a size 0 is not the end of the world. Think what a field trip would be like for teenage girls who feel they are either too fat or too thin? How about getting them visit the opposite coast line of where they live now? There would a change in attitude when they get to see that its better or worse depending on where they are from.

Those in the middle of the West and East coast, well I don’t know what it is like for them but be warned not to visit Miami anytime soon. There they don’t wear anything but bikini tops and short shorts. It has been said that a very buff size 0 from LA felt fat, when she got off the plane in Miami.

What this really means ladies, whereever you might live; it all boils down to this. Be happy with who you are, diet and exercise under a doctor’s supervision, and don’t worry about what other women size may be. Ask any man, they love us, no matter what size big or small we may be.

Battle of the Burgers: Comparison of Fast Food Burgers

Lets face it. Every once in a while, there is nothing that will hit the spot like a fast food burger. Many Americans rely on fast food for its convenience and affordability, which is undoubtably a huge factor contributing to our current obesity epidemic. The movie Supersize Me did a great job pointing out what fast food can do to you if you make it a part of your every day life. (Check it out if you haven’t seen it.) If fast food is an exception, rather than the rule, it can be part of a balanced healthy diet.

When practicing mindful eating, you may eat a 1500 calorie meal in one sitting, but if you listen to your body, you will find that you will not be as hungry later or the next day. Our body’s will balance out our hunger with our calorie requirements if we tune in. Once you are tuned into your body, you will find that after eating a greasy burger and fries, your body probably wants something lighter and healthier for the next meal.

When the cravings strike me, my fast food favorites are Arby’s and Carl’s Jr. After doing a bit of research, I was AMAZED at how some of the choices that we may think are more healthy are actually some of the worst options! (Check out the nutritional information for the Market Fresh sandwiches at Arby’s…not as healthy as you might think!) Most fast food restaurants have nutritional information on their websites, and soon, many will start displaying nutritional information on food wrappers. Until then, here is a summary of popular fast food burgers. I’ve linked each restaurant with its nutritional pages, so check out your favorites!

General guidelines to choosing a healthier burger:

1. The “low carb” option saves lots of calories- typically served in a lettuce wrap instead of a bun

2.

Kids sized burgers are your best bet, typically, the smaller the burger, the lower the calories

3. If a kids burger won’t do it for you, try a Jr sized burger, same taste as the full version, but not quite as big.

4. Leaving off the cheese will save you anywhere between 50 and 150 calories.
